Key West is so dirty and bad as I heard?

I've lived in Florida for 8 years and have never been to Key West. My husband and I are considering taking an order weeks trip for my birthday in late July, but all who speak here in Florida, says his dirty, old and run down with homeless people and beggars everywhere. We are planning to stay in a nice hotel that I found called Reosrt Hyatt Marina. We are not big partiers, but enjoy watching the sunset and sipping a drink in the hotel room, etc. However, I feel safe walking around the city and what I hear, I do not know if that be the case. I know this is the season low for a lot of tourists and cruise ships, but only wanted to ensure that not only its going to be full of crazy everywhere. Therefore, it is Key West really as scary as some people make it seem?

I'm from the Midwest and I'm not a big partier. But, I went to Key West for the first time in 1999, it was amazing for me – and I love it. And we stayed at the Hyatt Marina for my first time down. The city comes alive at night – do not let that scare you. Some people like that becomes crazy bar hop … etc. But many of us who like things during the day – then at night – cold and relax. We moved to South Florida in 2001 and went to Key West and other key SEVERAL TIMES. Even married in Key West in late July of that year. And we had family down, stay … etc. .. including my mother and children small. I'd say go with the flow. Explore during the day. We rented bikes one day and had a lot of fun. Scooters are another option. There are a lot of historic places to go. And if you want to avoid the "party" atmosphere — then at night, a nice dinner with a couple of drinks — and slowly head back to the Hyatt, have cocktails with her husband on her balcony. Since then, we returned to the Midwest – but I love it down there – it happens to be one of my places favorites to go and I was saying something very TONIGHT. Some of my favorite restaurants are Kelly, Handles for a nice dinner, romantic. And Blue Heaven is a need for breakfast! Have fun!
