The growth in Atlanta's bustling business and entertainment center it is today dates back to 1990 when the city was chosen to host the Olympic Games 1996 – an announcement that city officials conducted several major construction projects to improve Atlanta's parks, transport and sporting facilities.
The gradual development of business and entertainment venues throughout the '90 's led to the city of Atlanta is marked by many tall buildings, the tallest of which – Bank of America Plaza – has the honor of being the tallest building in the United States outside New York and Chicago. These tall buildings are grouped into three districts of the city, namely, Downtown, Midtown and Buckhead, with each district offering its own attractions and unique attractions. After completion of the Center One Atlantic in 1987, the advent of Midtown Atlanta companies began and has continued since then, turning midtown's most vibrant areas of the city.
The bustling downtown Atlanta, has always been popular with tourists, with a number of famous attractions of the city located in that area too, including Underground Atlanta – a bloc of six areas under the city, built in early 19th century streets of Atlanta and now home to many restaurants, bars, shops and leisure, offering tourists a glimpse of the history of the city. The downtown area is also famous for The Georgia Aquarium. Since opening in November 2005 soon has made its name as one of the major tourist destinations, not only in Atlanta, but in the United States, boasting more than 100,000 animals of 500 different species different, which is the world's largest aquarium.
In the north of the city lies the Buckhead district, consistently ranked as one of the communities rich in the United States and considered "the jewel of the city." Since the district was linked to the highway system of the city in the early of 1990, Buckhead has developed a dense commercial district, centered around sales centers at Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza, with several office buildings and residential buildings high-rise is added to the area regularly over the years, joining a host of restaurants, bars and some of the best hotels in Atlanta.
Each district of Atlanta is rich in history and culture, with many monuments and museums detailing the civil rights movement, much of the city property, as Atlanta's contribution to the entertainment and performing arts, which is well illustrated by the many theaters and concert halls scattered throughout the city. Sports enthusiasts also regularly go to Atlanta to see his four major league sports action in areas that are tourist destinations themselves, including expanding the Georgia Dome and Philips Arena.
The rapid growth of Atlanta in the last twenty years has contributed greatly to his reputation today among tourists and residents alike as a city of unlimited potential, deserves much more than the nickname "New York South.
